John Westervelt Medallion Coin Silver Large Sugar Spoons - 2, c. 1860's
John Westervelt was from Newburgh, New York and made some great flatware and holloware. The flat ends above wonderfully twisted stems are beautifully engraved around
reserved monogrammed with a 'O'. Above the initials are oval portraitures of mustached gentlemen executed in a classical style. The shaped, fluted bowls are gilded on both
sides and exhibit slight wear to the gilding.
Westervelt ran a medium sized, high quality firm that made
and retailed silver in Newburgh during the second half of the 19th century. This server dates to before 1870, when he switched over to the sterling standard. Westervelt had a reputation
as an honest businessman whose silver was up to standard. Scientific analysis of his products has proven this to be true. While other upstate makers shortchanged their customers with
lower than standard silvers, Westervelt's silver measures up to standard. (See Silver Magazine, articles by Don Soeffing, Sept./Oct & Nov./Dec. 1992.)
The backs of these coin silver spoons are stamped with Westervelt's trademark. They measure just shy of 7 inches, weigh 0.90 troy ounces each and are in very good antique condition.
