American Sterling Fish Serving Set retailed by J. E. Caldwell, Philadelphia, c. 1850’s

American Sterling Fish Serving Set retailed by J. E. Caldwell, Philadelphia, c. 1860

This wonderful serving set consists of a large serving fork and flat-blade server in an ‘Olive’ pattern. Handle detail of American Sterling Fish Serving Set retailed by J. E. Caldwell, Philadelphia, c. 1860 Both the fronts and backs of the handles feature a large oval blank flanked by olive leaf decoration with the fronts being engraved with a cursive style ‘AB’ monogram.  The 5-tined fork is pierced and beautifully decorated with scroll engraving and foliate garlands traveling along the tines.  The figural blade of the flat server is an exceptionally engraved example of a dolphin or fish with a looping tail and circular eye piercing.  These rare servers are sometimes referred to as dolphin-blade servers.

These lovely servers are stamped on the back with the Philadelphia retailer ‘J.E. CALDWELL & CO’ and ‘STERLING’.  The fork and blade measure 10 and 13.75 inches long respectively weigh a combined 9.45 troy ounces and are in excellent condition.
