Set of Four Rare English Sterling Silver Chinoiserie Salt Cellars, three by Rebecca Emes & Edward Barnard, London, 1818-20, one by Edward Barnard & Sons, 1847/48
These exquisite salts feature rare cast chinoiserie figural legs terminating with shell pad feet. Decorated between the legs with wonderful rococo foliate scenes on stippled backgrounds, they are engraved with lion crests in the cartouches. The rims are ornamented with cast and applied foliate and shell designed borders.
These wonderful sterling silver salts are fully hallmarked. Three bear the maker’s mark of Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard, of which two bear the date mark of 1818/19 and one bears the date mark of 1819/20. The identical fourth salt bears the makers mark of Edward, John & William Barnard with a date mark of 1847/48. They measure 2 inches high by 3.5 inches round, weigh a combined 23.25 troy ounces and are in wonderful antique condition with light wear to the original interior gilding.
