Dominick & Haff Japonesque Sterling Silver Vase, 1881
One of the great things about aesthetic silver is that it is fun. Dominick & Haff were masters at producing this line of silver. They mixed great design with whimsy to create
stunning pieces of sterling during this period.
Large background hammer marks make this piece sparkle. The deep intaglio chased designs make the piece a work of art. Underneath the top rim of the flaring neck is a chased
scene of clouds underneath which is inscribed '1856/ MAY 12/ 1881'(obviously a 25th anniversary gift). The bulbous lower portion of the vase is remarkably chased with two
exotic birds, a dragonfly and a butterfly, all in flight. Additional decoration of
chased foliage emanates from the base.
The underneath bears Dominick & Haff's trademark (partially rubbed from an old monogram removal ). It is also marked 'STERLING',
with the model number '22' and by the Boston retailer BIGELOW, KENNARD & CO'. This stunning and rare vase measures 7.5 inches high,
weighs 9.85 troy ounces and is in excellent condition.
