A rare and wonderful example of William Adams silver from New York is represented in this beautiful cup with tulip-shaped body and pedestal base. Die-rolled
banding acts as decoration and reinforcement to the top rim and bottom edge of the foot. Attached at the side is a lovely 'S'-scroll handle with thumb piece. The
front is engraved 'ELP' in beautiful script.
William Adams was a very important silversmith. His famous works include the 1841 mace of the United States House of Representatives and the Henry Clay presentation urn. In Elegant Plate – Three Centuries
of Precious Metals in New York by Deborah Waters, an identical cup with a slightly different handle that was used as a prize by the American Institute at their 1841 fair is discussed (pp. 263-4).
This wonderful silver cup is marked underneath 'W. ADAMS' and 'NEW YORK' in serrated rectangles. It measures 4.5 inches high to the top of the handle,
weighs 3.85 troy ounces and is in excellent antique condition.
