Pair of English Sterling Silver Wine Coasters by Emes & Barnard, London, 1817/18

Of circular form, this fine pair of wine coasters has an applied gadrooned border.  The bulbous bodies have a lovely lobe and bellflower design.  Each has a central boss in the turned wooded base engraved with an untraced coat of arms.

Rebecca Emes was one of England's most famous women silversmiths.  She was the widow of the important silversmith John Emes and went into partnership with Edward Barnard not long after John's death in 1807. Their firm made some exceptional silver during the early 19th century, some of their items being sold by the Royal Goldsmiths, Rundell, Bridge and Rundell - the same firm that retailed Paul Storr's silver. (See Women Silversmiths). Edward Barnard registered his first mark in partnership with three sons on 29 February 1829, presumably after the death or retirement of Rebecca Emes. The Barnard firm is also noted for fabricating exceptional silver throughout the 19th century.

These wonderful sterling wine coasters are fully marked along the edge of the bases. They measure 6.25 inches in diameter and made of the heavy gauge silver (it is impossible to weigh them without removing the bases).  They are in very good/ excellent crisp antique condition with one split in the wood of one of the coasters (visible above) and replaced felt padding underneath.
