Durgin, from Concord, New Hampshire, made some wonderful silver and this asparagus server is no exception. The simplicity and elegance of the wide, slightly curved tines contrast nicely with the stylized Egyptianate pattern on the handle. We don't know the name of this undocumented pattern (although we speculate it may be ‘Empress Josephine’ – a pattern name used by Durgin in 1887 for which no documentation exists). It is a beautifully cast design with exotic Egyptian motifs on the front and back.
The handle is stamped on the back with Durgin's early bird in a wreath trademark 'D', 'STERLING/ PAT APP FOR'. This lovely server measures 9 inches long, weighs 3.6 troy ounces and is in very good antique condition with a slight touch of wear to the original gilding on the back where it rests. This server has never been monogrammed.
